INTRODUCTION TO THE TOPIC, MAIN TYPES OF EMOTIONS
WHAT ARE EMOTIONS?
Emotions are defined as complex psychophysiological states, hat arise in response to internal or external stimuli. They include physiological changes, such as changes in heart rate and hormone levels, subjective experiences like joy or sadness, and behavioral reactions, such as a smile or tears. Emotions play a key role in вour everyday functioning, influencing perception, thinking, and behavior. They help us respond quickly to threats, maintain social connections, and make decisions. It is important to note that evolutionarily, emotions developed as mechanisms that support survival and adaptation, helping our ancestors react to dangers and opportunities in their environment.
Emotions not only help us cope with current situations but also shape our long-term preferences and behaviors. For example, experiencing joy may motivate us to repeat a certain action, while fear may prevent us from engaging in potentially dangerous situations. Thus, emotions are an integral part of the human experience and play an important role in our personal and social well-being.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO DIFFERENTIATE? Understanding the difference between emotions and feelings is essential for effectively managing your emotional state. When we are aware of what we are experiencing and can distinguish between emotions and feelings, it allows us to respond more effectively to different situations. Emotions often arise as automatic reactions to external events and can be short-term and intense, while feelings are typically longer-lasting and conscious states connected to our thoughts and experiences. Being aware of our feelings helps us better understand our reactions and behaviors. When we know exactly what we feel and why, we can make more informed decisions and respond to situations more appropriately.
EMOTIONS vs FEELINGS
EMOTIONS Emotions are triggered by specific events and can be immediate reactions to those events. When we encounter a particular situation or stimulus, our emotions arise almost instantly and are often accompanied by physical changes such as increased heart rate, sweating, or changes in breathing. For example, in the face of sudden danger, we may feel fear, and our body reacts immediately to this emotion, preparing us for quick, necessary action. Emotions play an important role in our ability to adapt to the world around us and respond to various situations. They help us quickly assess events and make decisions that can be crucial for our survival and well-being. Emotions also signal to others our inner state in various ways.
FEELINGS Feelings are the experiences of emotions, which can be more prolonged and less intense. Unlike emotions, which are often short-lived and can arise without awareness, feelings tend to stay with us for a longer period of time and are typically the result of conscious experience. For example, anger is an emotion that can arise suddenly and intensely in response to a particular event. However, the feeling of resentment or disappointment is a feeling that can persist long after the initial emotion of anger has subsided. Feelings are often connected to our thoughts and inner experiences, making them more complex and deeper compared to emotions. They may result from prolonged reflections on our experiences and relationships with others. Feelings such as resentment or disappointment can arise from extended thinking about what happened and how it affected us. These feelings can have a lasting impact on our behavior and perception of the world.
TYPES OF EMOTIONS
Understanding these basic emotions helps us to better understand our reactions and behaviours in different situations. This knowledge is the foundation for developing emotional intelligence and better interactions.
There are six basic emotions recognised as universal: Joy: A positive emotion associated with contentment and happiness. It occurs in response to achievements, pleasant events, or interactions with loved ones. Joy contributes to improved mood and general well-being. Grief: A negative emotion caused by loss, disappointment, or failure. It can manifest as feelings of hopelessness or sadness. Sadness is important to the grieving process and helps to make sense of the experience of loss. Fear: A response to threat or danger that helps avoid potentially harmful situations. Fear activates the ‘hit or run’ response, preparing the body for action.
Anger: A response to frustration, injustice, or threat. Anger may motivate to defend one's rights or correct injustices. However, uncontrolled anger can lead to conflict and negative consequences. Surprise: A reaction to an unexpected event. Surprise can be either positive or negative, depending on the nature of the event. This emotion helps to adapt to new situations and encourages exploratory behaviour. Aversion: A reaction to unpleasant or harmful stimuli. It protects us from consuming dangerous substances or coming into contact with harmful elements in the environment.
Joy, sadness, anger, fear, surprise, disgust, delight, disappointment, serenity, anxiety, relief, irritation, admiration, embarrassment, boredom, inspiration, doubt, confidence, depression, jealousy, gratitude, hatred, pride, nostalgia, regret, shame, hope, apathy, curiosity, rage, envy, satisfaction, fright, impatience, euphoria, sympathy, resentment, calmness, tenderness, hostility, anticipation, confusion, contempt, thrill, despair, cheerfulness, care, enchantment, melancholy, determination, affection, anxiety, adoration, humility, distrust, discontent, sorrow, delight, malice, awe, compassion, bitterness, irritability, rejection, bliss, amazement, admiration, longing, alienation, passion, consolation, excitement, revival, enthusiasm, gratitude, hope, worry, regret, confusion, anxiety, irritation, pleasure, care, resentment, inspiration, embarrassment, worry, interest, депрессия, fatigue, disgust, insecurity, kindness.

MORE ABOUT EMOTIONS
PHYSIOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF EMOTIONS
PHYSIOLOGY OF EMOTIONS Emotions are accompanied by noticeable physiological changes in the body. When we experience fear or anger, the levels of adrenaline and norepinephrine increase in the body. These hormones cause an increased heart rate, muscle tension and readiness for quick actions, such as fight or flight. These reactions are part of our natural system. When experiencing joy and love, the levels of endorphins and oxytocin rise in the body. Endorphins contribute to feelings of happiness and reduce the perception of pain, while oxytocin, often called the "love hormone," enhances feelings of attachment and trust. These hormones create a sense of well-being and improve our overall emotional state, thus positively affecting us and improving our interaction with others through the positive emotions mentioned above.
MANAGING EMOTIONS TO IMPROVE HEALTH Understanding these physiological changes helps us better manage our emotional states and improve our physical health. Awareness of how our emotions affect the body allows us to take steps to reduce the negative effects of stress and amplify positive emotions. For example, we can use meditation to reduce stress. Moreover, knowledge of the physiological aspects of emotions helps us better understand our emotional state and respond to it more consciously. His may involve recognizing when our body is under increased stress and taking steps to reduce it, such as physical activity, proper nutrition, and adequate sleep. As a result, we can improve not only our emotional state but also our overall physical health, leading to a more harmonious and balanced life.
SOCIAL ASPECTS OF EMOTIONS
RELATIONSHIPS, AND PERSONAL GROWTH Emotions play a fundamental role in our daily lives, influencing our perception of the world and our interactions with others. The social aspects of emotions are particularly important, as they determine the quality of our relationships and our ability to empathize and understand other people. It is important to note that developing emotional intelligence and the ability to manage our emotions are key factors in personal and professional growth. The ability to recognize and control our emotional reactions helps us solve problems more effectively, build constructive relationships, and achieve our goals. Emotional competence also contributes to reducing stress levels and improving overall well-being. EMOTIONS IN SOCIAL DYNAMICS Social dynamics are also strongly influenced by emotions, playing an important role in group behavior and various social interactions. Emotional reactions can affect decisions made within a group and how participants continuously interact with one another. When a positive emotional atmosphere prevails in a group, participants tend to engage in more constructive and productive interactions, which promotes the achievement of shared goals. Understanding and managing emotions can help improve teamwork and the overall atmosphere in a group, thereby leading to more productive and harmonious interactions. The ability to recognize and consider the emotions of others is a key aspect of effective communication and collaboration. Emotions influence our perceptions and behaviors, helping to form interpersonal connections and fostering the development of trust and understanding within a team. It is important to consider the emotional needs of each participant to create a harmonious and productive working environment where everyone feels part of a whole and contributes to the collective success.
PSYCHOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF EMOTIONS
EMOTIONS AND THINKING: IMPACT ON CREATIVITY AND PERCEPTION Emotions have a significant impact on thinking and perception. They play a key role in our ability to interpret and respond to various situations. Positive emotions, such as joy, can greatly уenhance creative thinking and problem-solving skills. When we feel joy, our brain becomes more flexible and open to new ideas, facilitating a more effective search for solutions. Additionally, positive emotions can promote a broader and more inclusive perception, helping us to see opportunities and perspectives, кthat we might overlook when in a neutral or negative emotional state. Negative emotions, such as fear and anxiety, can have the opposite effect. They focus our attention on potential threats and dangers, which can be useful in situations requiring quick and decisive responses. However, this heightened focus on threats may negatively affect our ability to perform complex cognitive tasks. Under the influence of fear and anxiety, we may become more cautious and conservative in our actions, which can hinder decision-making processes and creative thinking.
EMOTIONS AND MEMORY: HOW FEELINGS AFFECT RECOLLECTIONS Emotionally intense events are better remembered because they activate the amygdala — the region of the brain responsible for processing emotions and memory. Such events leave more vivid and lasting traces in our memory, allowing us to earn from past experiences and better adapt to future situations. Emotions play a critical role in the process of forming and retaining memories, underscoring their importance for overall cognitive functioning. Emotions also influence decision-making, encouraging more optimistic or, conversely, more cautious behavior depending on the emotional state.
FUNCTIONS OF EMOTIONS
MOTIVATIONAL FUNCTION Emotions play an important role in our lives and can significantly motivate us toward various actions. For instance, anger, as a strong emotion, can stimulate us to defend our rights or change an unjust situation. This feeling can provide us with energy and determination, to fight against injustice and stand up for our beliefs. When we feel anger, our body and mind mobilize to act decisively and think critically.
COMMUNICATIVE FUNCTION Emotions help convey our internal states to others, thereby greatly facilitating social interaction. Expressions of emotions, such as a smile or tears, allow others to understand our feelings and respond to them, which strengthens social bonds.
REGULATORY FUNCTION Emotions help regulate our behavior and maintain internal balance. For example, guilt can prompt us to quickly correct a mistake, while gratitude can strengthen positive relationships with loved ones.. These functions highlight the importance of emotions in our lives. They not only help us adapt to changing circumstances but also play a key role in our emotional and social well-being.
АДАПТИВНАЯ ФУНКЦИЯ Emotions help us respond quickly to the environment. For example, fear prompts us to avoid danger, increasing our chances of survival. Joy motivates us to seek out repeated positive experiences, contributing to our overall well-being.
