The sound,​ compared to the traditional sound of punk rock,​ became faster,​ heavier,​ and the compositions became shorter.​

Hardcore is a musical genre that emerged in the United States and Great Britain in the late 1970s as a result of separation from punk rock.​

In 1981,​ Vancouver band D.​O.​A.​ released an album called Hardcore '81,​ which undoubtedly helped popularize the term.​
