The main themes of the songs are personal freedom, anarchy, politics, social aspects, straight edge, veganism, violence, and pacifism.
The sound, compared to the traditional sound of punk rock, became faster, heavier, and the compositions became shorter.
Hardcore is a musical genre that emerged in the United States and Great Britain in the late 1970s as a result of separation from punk rock.
In 1981, Vancouver band D.O.A. released an album called Hardcore '81, which undoubtedly helped popularize the term.
Fugazi is an American punk band formed in 1987 in Washington, D.C., and is considered one of the founders of the hardcore genre. Their music combines elements of post-punk and hardcore, and their lyrics often deal with social and political issues, which made them iconic figures in the music culture of the 1990s.
Fugazi are also known for their independent approach to recording and distributing music, as well as their rejection of commercialism, which inspired many subsequent bands in the hardcore world and beyond.
I play for myself and my friends
Basically, hardcore culture "stewed in itself", without going beyond the party, according to the principle "I play for myself and my friends". Recording studios were created with their own money, concerts were organized.

The most famous symbol of sXe is a cross on the back of the hand, similar to the ones that minors would wear when entering a bar to prevent them from being sold alcohol. The movement arose as a counterweight to the traditional punk mentality of "live fast, die young".
“I think that the idea of straight edge, the song that I wrote, and the way people have related it it, there's some people who have abused it, they've allowed their fundamentalism to interfere with the real message, which in my mind, was that people should be allowed to live their lives the way they want to.”

Early hardcore bands were not initially created as primarily commercial projects. Musicians, distributing their recordings and organizing their concerts, relied only on their own strength and the support of their fans. In contrast to commercial music, which received support from large record companies, coverage in all sorts of magazines and music radio stations, hardcore refused all of this on principle.
It is important to note that in America it was considered normal for a young group to try to find the biggest producer possible and sign a contract with a major record company - there was nothing shameful about this in principle.
